Our Sustainability Aims

The Need For Change

Climate change and biodiversity loss are arguably two of the most serious challenges that the world and humanity face today.  The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world, with 1 in 6 species now at threat from extinction.  We are experiencing more intense, more frequent extreme weather events such heatwaves and flooding; all caused by a warming planet.

Golf clubs are collectively the third largest landowner in the country, connecting a wide range of vital ecosystems and habitats, enabling them to help nature on a landscape-scale.

As such, golf clubs play a pivotal role in contributing to sustainability efforts, as well as showing its members the way to a more sustainable future.

What Are We Doing To Help?

The Club has established its 'Sustainability Aims' which can be viewed on the link below.

The Club is implementing several initiatives to promote sustainability, some of which include:

  • Taking steps to conserve and reduce water consumption
  • Introducing grasses that are more resilient and require less water, fertiliser and chemicals
  • Manage the land and surrounding grass areas to aid biodiversity and support the continued development of natural downland flora
  • Assess how the club can migrate to fully electric machinery to maintain the course
  • Apply water conservation practices and considering how the Club can become more resiliant
  • Foster a healthy ecosystem by preserving natural habitats, planting native vegetation, and creating wildlife-friendly areas
  • Encourage sustainable turf management techniques
  • Educate members, staff, golfers and local communities about our sustainability practices
  • Work with suppliers, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure sustainable sourcing of materials, equipment, and services.  As well as collaborating on initiatives that benefit both the club and the environment
  • Optimising irrigation systems to reduce consumption
  • Develop and encourage natural habitats for a wide range of biodiversity

Benefits To The Club

Sustainability intiatives also offer underlying benefits to the Club as a business, which include:

  • Saving Costs
  • Developing a high quality course which is maintained using sustainable practices and is more resilient into the future
  • Promoting and producing a more attractive playing environment for golfers to experience
  • Drive participation by attracting golfers and new members that prioritise sustainability when choosing a Club to play and join
  • Improve the Clubs reputation by prioritising and demonstrating our commitment to environmental stewardship

How Can You Help?

  • Use refillable drinks containers
  • Use the same glass for refills at the Bar
  • Use the designated bins correctly
  • Use the recycling bins available around the course
  • Use your own carry/shopping bags when purchasing goods from the Pro Shop
  • Car share with friends and other golfers
  • Take a shorter shower
  • Take a balanced view when sustainable practices are applied
  • Support the Club by promoting its sustainability activities

The Future

It is important that the Club understands and acknowledges its commitment to environmental stewardship and communicate the importance and need to proactively develop sustainably practices to its members

Sustainability must be prioritised and incorporated into the  business and strategic planning of the Club as a business and members club

The Club wants to be a driver of change within the golfing industry and play its part

The Club wants to create a sustainable and resilient Club and course to ensure its long-term future
